Because over 12 weeks you can really accomplish a huge amount, and put in place some really serious new musical skills.

And then it’s not “you must do season one and then proceed to season two and then proceed to season three” and so on.

Each season is themed. And independent of the others. Naturally if you do go through all four you’ll learn the most, but because they’re designed this way you have a ton of flexibility during the year and can also allow for other musical training you might want to do - including within Musical U, but I’ll say more on that in a minute.

When you are going through a Season, things are laid out for you clearly week-to-week. And then during the week it’s up to you exactly what you do when, some parts are optional to allow for those who have more time available and less time. And you’re also free to come and go and take breaks during the Season if you need to.

And through it all, our team is on hand every day, to help you navigate it all and figure out the best route forwards for you, personally.

We tend to call this “support” but it’s actually more like coaching. We are there to answer specific training questions. But also to help encourage and motivate you. So what will we be covering? What can you expect to learn over the course of the year?

Naturally I can only share so much in a short amount of time, but I want to give you a sense of it!

Our first Season is themed as as “fresh start”, a way to return to the fundamentals of music listening, musical understanding, and music-making. Equipping you with the mental models and frameworks you need to understand music instinctively. And you’ll be amazed how much you can do once you learn these things, even without improving your instrument skills at all.

Then in the second Season we’ll be going deep on improvising and showing how anyone can tap into their innate creativity - and actually use that as a way to explore all kinds of music learning in a fun, easy, and effective way. We flip “Learn to Improvise” into “Improvise to Learn” - pretty cool, right?

Then in Season three our theme is playing by ear, and learning the specific skills it takes to hear a piece of music - and then play it back right away on your instrument with no notation required. We have a unique Integrated Ear Training approach which makes sure that it’s all an enjoyable and musical experience, and every step forwards you take produces real, tangible, practical new abilities you can put to immediate use.

And we’ll be rounding off the year in Season four with something that’s a bit hard to describe until you get into it. But imagine if learning music theory was done through actual music-making and creative activities - with no dry textbooks, abstract explanations or rote fact-learning in sight. Sounds good, right? Q: What exactly is included?

Your new Living Music membership will replace your existing membership.

If you are on an annual plan we will refund pro rata for any time remaining on your plan (e.g. if you're halfway through your membership year, we'll refund 50% of your last annual payment).

Q: When does the annual membership start?

The annual membership will start on the day that you purchase.

Q: How long will I have access to the courses in this program?

You’ll have access to all the courses for as long as you're a Living Music member.

If you have previously purchased a standalone course like Foundations of a Musical Mind or The Circle Mastery Experience, this doesn't change the fact that you purchased lifetime access to those courses i.e. you would keep access to those even if you ended your Living Music membership.

Q: Is Living Music right for me?

The Living Music program is designed to help a very wide range of people become more musical.

It's suitable for all instruments and styles of music and we welcome people of all ability levels, from beginner through to professional.

A few cases where it might not be a fit...

✗ If you are solely interested in passing exams – then this probably isn’t what you're looking for.

✗ If you are a professional musician who can already play anything you can imagine, fluently and expressively – then our training material isn’t quite designed for you. You’d still be very welcome in the community, mind you!

✗ If you are under 16, then sorry - our minimum age is 16 years old. (There is no maximum!)

✗ If you hate talking to people and you’re determined to learn in isolation without any help, guidance or assistance along the way – then Living Music is not for you.

… but if those don't apply - and if you love music and you want to become more musical, then the answer is clear: “Yes! Living Music is right for you!”

Q: Is this suitable for beginners? Do I need to know music theory?

Living Music is designed to be 100% accessible to beginners. No prior knowledge is required.

Q: What if I’m just naturally unmusical?

We don’t believe that’s possible! As long as your ears are fundamentally working (which you can check here), you are capable of developing your musicality.

Many of our students at Musical U have started off fearing they are “unmusical” or just don’t have the “gift” they need to become a musician. In every case, we’ve been able to help them develop their musical skills and realise they are perfectly capable of realising their musical aspirations.

Q: Will this work for my instrument?

The short answer is: yes.

At Musical U we focus on the “inner skills” of musicianship. That means things like recognising notes and chords by ear, imagining music clearly, understanding the music you hear, and knowing how to express your musical ideas. These concepts and skills all apply perfectly to every instrument.

Although we don’t teach the instrument specifics (e.g. how to play a C Major chord on your instrument, or how to improve your fingering) you will be able to take what you learn in the Living Music program and apply it directly on whatever instrument you play.

In fact, this is one of the major benefits of developing your musicality: that you will find it easy to pick up new instruments and quickly learn to play them too. This is because you begin to actually understand what makes music work, and those core truths are the same for guitar, piano, saxophone, violin, … just about everything!

Q: Will you teach me to play an instrument?

No. But we can help set you free on your instrument!

At Musical U we focus on the “inner skills” of musicianship. We feel there are plenty of websites, products, tutorial videos, and (of course!) in-person teachers dedicated to teaching you how to play an instrument – and far too few resources for teaching the real skills of musicality!

With Living Music you can learn these fundamental skills of being musical, and then apply them on whatever instrument(s) you play. And of course the community is there if you want to talk about the instrument specifics and how to apply your newly-learned skills on your instrument.

As long as you're at least a few months into learning an instrument you'll get on just fine.

How It Works

Q: How much time will it take?

As always we’re trying to design things to accommodate our members who have busy lives to fit their music learning into.

With Living Music we’re very much encouraging daily engagement, and our best estimate would be 15-30 minutes per day. We’re aiming to keep it to roughly 15 mins/day, so expect that 30mins/day will be comfortable for the vast majority of students.

Q: Will I have to scramble to keep up with others?

No, it’s up to you how fast to go.

We will be running each 12-week Season "live" week by week - but there’s no deadline to complete the training modules or Seasons. If life gets busy or you need to take a few days off – no problem! You just continue again when you’re ready.

We firmly believe in the importance of flexibility in musical training, to suit each individual learner - so even though Living Music is designed around 12-week Seasons and we will be running each one "live" the first time, you will always have plenty of flexibility about what you do when. You will have access to all material on-demand after it's published (including recordings of live Q&A calls etc.).

And if you join on an annual plan in this week's "Launch" offer you will also unlock the full library of training modules and musicality courses, providing even more opportunity for flexible "choose your own adventure" training during the year.

Q: Do I need to download everything?

No.

A lot of the training inside Musical U does provide downloadable training resources. However, there is no need to download everything: you can use everything directly through our website using your browser.

Q: Can I do Living Music on a mobile device (phone, tablet)?

Yes.

Our online training website is compatible with all modern internet devices and web browsers.

As long as you have some type of web browser (e.g. Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer) on your device, you will be able to use the site successfully.

Q: Do you offer in-person tuition?

Musical U is an online education provider, so we don’t offer any in-person tuition.

Q: Do you provide certificates or accreditation?

We do not currently issue certificates, diplomas or other accreditation for Living Music.

However there is detailed progress tracking inside the site so that you can see clearly what you are achieving through your training.

Q: What if I get stuck or need help?

At Musical U we specialise in helping adult music-learners succeed with online training materials.

Any time you feel stuck, confused, have a question or need help, our team will be standing by and happy to help.

The first option is to post in the discussions you'll find throughout the site. Our team will be in there every day answering questions and providing any clarification or tips required.

The second option is to post an update inside the site to share your experiences. Even if you don't have a clear specific question in mind you can often get great assistance this way!

The third option is to contact our team directly if you'd prefer to receive help privately. You can do this by email or using the message system on the site.

Q: If I join now, will I have access to future material as it's added?

Yes, you will automatically have access to each new Season as it's added, for the duration of your subscription.

Q: How do I pay?

You can purchase Living Music through our secure order form using a credit or debit card (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express) or with a PayPal account. By linking your PayPal account to your bank account or topping up your PayPal balance in another way it is possible to pay without having a credit or debit card. You may also be eligible for PayPal Credit which allows you to spread the payment, in some cases with zero interest.

Your membership is then automatically renewed using the same payment method. If you need to update your credit card details, change payment method, or cancel your account to prevent automatic renewal you can do this easily through the account management page inside the site or by contacting our support team at [email protected] at any time.

Q: Is there a payment plan?
